I never thought of starting a CTF blog. But after completing a few challenges from TryHackMe, BTLO, CyberDefenders, and HTB, I came to the realization that taking notes is not enough to reinforce what I have learned in the rooms I have completed. Anyway, here are the “Why’s” of this blog.
- Skill development- I am a novice in Cybersecurity. I have no experience in IT. Most of my career is in Hospitality. So, one way for me to learn and develop the skills is through CTFs hosted by those platforms. I recently completed THM’s SOC level 1 Path and I really enjoyed it. For disclosure, I have a few certificates in Cybersecurity, but THM’s SOC level 1 is, if not, one of the paths I really like and had fun doing it.
- Learning reinforcement- Taking notes is very important in every projects, labs, or rooms. But, what writing a write-up or walk through does, in the process, is that, it reinforces my learning process; it solidifies my knowledge and bridge the gaps in my comprehension.
- Knowledge sharing- My initial intention for a creating a blog is so that I have notes that I can refer to. But in all honesty, I read write-ups or walk through when I am stuck in a lab. And sometimes, I feel frustrated because, as a novice, I wanted to dig deeper. So this blog is to share my knowledge, my way.
- Personal development. English is not my first language, and though I am in an English-speaking country, my communication skills have deteriorated over the past years. Working at the back-of-house does not really help in improving my communications skills, but I hope that by blogging, I can build confidence in expressing my thoughts effectively.
This is an exciting endeavor that will allow me to grow and develop in cybersecurity. As a novice in the field, participating in CTF challenges has been so far a fantastic way for me to learn and acquire new skills. I hope that with this platform, I am able to grow and hopefully help aspiring cybersecurity professionals, like me, in their learning journey.
